Kane Tanaka, whose birthday was on January 2, celebrated her 117th birthday at a nursing home in southern Japan and marked the big day with a party with friends and staff.

Local broadcaster TVQ Kyushu Broadcasting Co shared videos of the event.

Tanaka took bites from her birthday cake and said: “Tasty,” adding, “I want some more.”

It was in 2019 when it was confirmed by Guinness Worlds Records that Tanaka is the oldest living person. Her record age is symbolic of the nation’s fast-aging population that is coupled with declining birthrate. The numbers raise concerns about labor shortages and prospects for economic growth in the future.

Last year, the number of infants born in Japan dropped 5.9 percent to less than 900,000 since the government began compiling data in 1899.

Tanaka was born in 1903 and tied the knot with Hideo Tanaka in 1922, according to Guinness World Records. They had four children together and adopted a fifth.

One internet user commented: “Bless her. Long may she live. The implication of the article is that she shouldnt be here as its an economic problem, but that is so ageist as she is probably more useful and productive at 117 than some 20 year olds.”

Another wrote: “I bet this lady has seen and experienced so much..would love to hear a few of her stories from early life.”

A third added: “And to think she may just live to see 3 world wars in her life time.”
