According to reports, the US Navy is soon to honor a World War II hero by naming a new aircraft carrier.
The news of the honoring the World War II Dorris Miller, a Mess Attendant 2nd class is expected to be revealed at Pearl Harbour on Monday.
Miller got into recognition after he manned a machine gun on the USS West Virginia and firing against the Japanese planes in 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbour.
The team leader for the Dorris Miller memorial said that he is the true inspiration for the youth who aspire to serve their country.
Dorris was a true example of going beyond your capabilities for the sake of your country.
He literally changes the way the navy used to think during those days. Being a mess attendant, Dorris has served the country.
This is one of the greatest honor that is given to Dorris Miller all these years. Naming an aircraft on his name is certainly an honor of a lifetime.
According to reports, Miller’s two nieces are expected to arrive at the ceremony at the Pearl Harbor that happened to be Martin Luther King Day as well.
The $13 billion aircraft carrier is from the Gerald R Ford Class supercarrier which is scheduled to launch in 2027. The carriers are said to be the largest in the world and hopefully replace the Nimitz Class.
Two of the Gerald R Ford Class have already been built: the USS Gerald R. Ford and the USS John F Kennedy. The third USS Enterprise is currently under construction and will be launched in 2025.
Naming the new aircraft carries after a sailor is not conventional, but it is great to honor the World War II hero in the best way possible. Miller died serving the ship which was attacked by the Japanese submarine in 1943.
