Their sweet romance, however, turned dark after Diane discovered that her lover, whom she married soon after meeting him, had an 18-year-old wife on top of their relationship.

Last year, Priyanjana was shot dead and according to Diane, people behind his murder were jealous of the $125k that she had sent him.

After his death, the man’s family wouldn’t let the British woman leave their house and continued asking her for money. It took Diane whole 18 months to ‘escape’ the family and return back home. “They wouldn’t let me go anywhere,” Peebles said. “They said it’s too dangerous to go out.”

Speaking of her emotions on This Morning, the 60-year-old admitted feeling like a “mug” after discovering that her husband had another, much younger wife.

“All my friends and family told me not to go over [to live with Priyanjana in Sri Lanka],” Diane said. “But I thought he loved me, and I loved him. You do silly things when you’re in love.”

The former council worker also explained that the money she had given him was used to build them a house and buy Priyanjana a minibus that he would use for taxi services.

“I’ve got nothing. I’ve got a very small pension from my old work, that’s what I’m living on,” Diane added.

“I’ve still got the house, even though it’s not in my name. I’ll need to go back to see if they’ll let me sell that.”

During the talk show, Diane also warned other women who might find themselves in similar situations.

“Don’t get involved with the locals, because they’re all very poor. A lot of them are looking to marry European women because they think we’re all very rich. I wasn’t very rich – but in their eyes, I was rich,” she said.
