When all of your loved ones are safe from the flames, what items would you save in case of a house fire? Most of us would take one or two things before walking out of the burning door.
For others, it might be gadgets or jewelry passed down through generations while for some, they would immediately grab irreplaceable photo albums.
For Marion Shelton of Virginia, one book is more special to her than any other things – a Bible she owned for more than seven decades.
When the 90-year-old’s trailer caught fire, she said to WSET-TV that “she didn’t know what was happening.” She struggled to fight for her life as soon as she realized that her house was getting swallowed by fire.
“I was trying to get out because I couldn’t get no breath,” she expressed.
The 90-year-old managed to go out with the help of Billy Hardy, her nephew.
“Flames were roughly 5, 6 feet tall and glass was breaking,” Hardy shared.
Shelton made it out alive and everything else was gone. But she had one last wish and that was to hold her old Bible again.
According to WSET, she has read it 18 times over the years. It is a very special book to her, which is why Brosville Fire and Rescue tried to retrieve it.
The organization wrote on Facebook: “Brosville Fire and Rescue assisted with a trailer fire this afternoon. This 90 year old lady lost everything she had due to the fire. She didn’t mind though, because we saved the bible she has had for over 75 years!”
Amber Stowe, a volunteer, told WSET: “She was very happy about it and was actually in tears. She’s our new granny.”
Her smile when she held the Bible against her chest is a symbol of hope and joy.
