A 44-year-old anonymous woman was rushed to a hospital after passing out while her partner was going down on her.
Despite regaining consciousness in three minutes following the pass out, the paramedics took the unfortunate woman to the ER.
The London-based couple was in the midst of passion when the woman’s body suddenly turned stiff. While they believed that excitement could be behind the fainting, doctors soon discovered that the woman suffered a stroke. As the scans revealed, one of the blood vessels inside her skull burst.
While the exact cause of the stroke couldn’t be pinpointed, the doctors suspect sudden changes in blood pressure caused by intense activity are the likely cause of bursting blood vessels.
Speaking of the horrifying moment, the woman’s partner explained that “her body became stiff” as she was nearing the climax.
“On closer history taking, the patient reported nearing orgasm … before losing consciousness,” the doctors responsible for treating the woman wrote in BMJ Case Reports. “She had been otherwise well preceding the event.”
While the medics initially believed the woman had suffered a seizure, the CT scans revealed internal bleeding between her brain and skull and diagnosed her with subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of brain bleeding. They also confirmed that high blood pressure resulting from s*xual activity could cause the woman’s blood vessel to burst.
“Older studies with artery monitoring during coitus demonstrate that during s*xual activity blood pressure, as well as heart rate, is very prone to change, with particular rises during orgasm,” the doctors noted.
Following the incident, the woman remained in the hospital for two weeks while the medics stopped the bleeding by injecting coagulants to accelerate clotting.
