Lil Thomas, a singer, who was born just one year after the First World War was serenaded by the staff from Willowbrook.
She was joined by her older her sister ‘Amy Winifred Hawkin’, or Win to honour such an incredible occasion.
These two extra-ordinary siblings have received a total of six birthday cards from the Queen of England. Lil is originally from Pillgwenlly in Newport, Wales but she is currently living at the Willowbrook assisted living home.
Lil and her older sister were known to grace the stage of the Newport’s Empire Theatre for a countless number of years. Lil said she had a pitch-perfect voice when she was two years old and tap-danced, sang and played the accordion.
Older sister Win was a part of a dance troupe and earned herself the nickname to be the highest kicker in Wales.
Therefore, when the War broke out in 1939 Lil, Win and their six brothers were sent off to work in the navy. Lil took the job of a bus conductor and became the first female bust conductor in Wales.
Once the war ended, Lil got married to a deputy postmaster named Donald and immigrated to South Africa with him.
Since both Lil and her husband were fond of entertainment, both of them took the chance and travelled around the country performing for charities in the process.
Both Donald and Lil returned to Wales, and she quickly took up the three-month caretaker’s job in the Bridge Inn in Luangwa right near Usk, Monmouthshire, which later on became a stay of 12 years.
Lil stopped singing when she was well into her 90s, and even though turned 100 there is always energy in her body that gives her the power to dance, even at this age.
Lil also declared that she lives her life to the fullest even though she is been suffering from arthritis for the past few years.
