A 21-year-old woman who struggled to bend down due to her bloated stomach finally discovered the cause of her problem.
Doctors found a massive ovarian cyst so big it was ‘occupying most of her abdomen.’
The growth was not cancerous but measured 24cm by 23cm (9 1/2 inches in width and length) growing inside her.
Surgeons removed the football-sized mass, which weighed 4kg (8.8lbs), and the unnamed patient recovered well.
Doctors at Royal Perth Hospital in Australia reported the incident in the journal BMJ Case Reports.
The 21-year-old woman said she had been suffering from bloating for months, and there had been no change in her bowel movements or appetite.
She didn’t have a family history of ovarian cancer and didn’t notice any change to her menstruation periods.
The cause of her discomfort finally became clear when doctors performed an ultrasound scan. It showed a solid grey mass taking over most of her stomach where organs would normally be seen.
They decided to remove the cyst in one piece instead of performing keyhole surgery, which could’ve burst the mass.
The gigantic cyst weighed 4kg and measured 21cm long. For comparison, a FA football measures 21-23 across.
No further problems were found and the patient recovered well.
Dr. Zi Qin Ng, who shared the report, said: “Giant abdominal cystic masses are rare occurrence and require [removal] due to its associated symptoms and complications associated with mass effect.
“Occasionally, rupture of the cyst can occur which can lead to haemorrhage and shock as an immediate [consequence].”
Dr. Zi added: “The origin of these giant cystic masses can be confusing and difficult to determine.
“The recommendation for giant cysts is for [removal] of the cyst due to their compressive symptoms and risk of [cancer].”
