Amid coronavirus lockdown, 73-year-old Susan Cadogan, who suffers from lung problems, was ordered to stay indoors and self-isolate to reduce the chances of catching the killer bug.

Tragically, the senior woman not only had to face isolation but also the death of her husband of 35 years, who died from cancer, as the pandemic rages on.

With lockdown orders in place, Susan wasn’t permitted to leave her home and wasn’t allowed to attend her husband’s funeral. Instead, she had to watch the hearse carrying her husband drive by her home from the safety of her window.

“I thought I had no tears left in me, I cried so much when Peter was ill and when he died. I promised myself I’d be strong, but when I saw the hearse, the tears started flowing again,” the brave lady said.

“(…) We wanted to give him a traditional send-off with friends and relatives talking about him and hugging each other after the service. But families can’t do that anymore, although we can still have virtual hugs.”

While a live-streamed service at the crematorium was set in place to give the family an opportunity to say their goodbyes, Susan couldn’t see it due to technical issues.

“It was a sad day, and very difficult for my mum, but it was too much of a risk for her to attend,” Paul Roberts, the deceased’s man’s stepson, who was one of two people allowed to attend the service, said.

“I arranged for the funeral directors to drive the hearse to my mum’s apartment so she could say goodbye and see him off on his final journey.

“She was upset and sadly she’s been unable to have the arms of her loved ones around her when she needs it most.”
