Vegan Family Could Lose Their Council Home After Rescuing Pig From Slaughterhouse

A vegan family is facing losing their council house if they refuse to give up a piglet named Arlo that they bought from a slaughterhouse in an attempt to save its life.

47-year-old Georgie Williams discovered the piglet when he was still staying with the breeders in “awful” conditions.

To free the animal and prevent it from getting sold for meat, Williams paid the owners to let her take Arlo home with her.

Despite the piglet making it into his new home safely, however, his future remains uncertain. According to the tenancy rules and regulations, the 47-year-old from Crowborough, East Sussex, is in breach of their contract and could lose her council house if she decided to keep the pet.

While Arlo clearly enjoys his new life, Ms. Williams fears that her pet will be taken to another slaughterhouse and sold for food if they take away her home.

“If you came near he would run away and scream or flinch like you were going to beat him. We had to coax him into letting us stroke him,” the woman explained.

From a petrified animal that was about to get slaughtered to a cuddly, happy pet, Arlo now warms the family’s beds at night.

After the council’s warning that keeping “a pig in the property is a breach of the tenancy,” Georgie’s daughter, Teddi, set up a petition to convince the authorities to let Arlo stay in the family’s home.

Another solution that Williams was initially thinking about was handing the pig over to an animal sanctuary. However, now that the family has gotten attached to it this seems like an unfavorable option.

Speaking of the conditions that Williams found the piglet in, Ms. Williams revealed the animals were visibly distressed, dirty, and extremely smelly.

“They were all absolutely petrified. The woman picked one up by one of its back legs and threw it into a pen for me to look at. The others were kicked out the way,” she said.
