19-year-old Megan Burgeen said she gave birth to a ‘big chunk of tumor’ after her stomach pains and heavy periods turned out to be cervical cancer.
The teen started suffering irregular bleeding and stomach pain but doctors said it was just her hormones.
But when she passed a huge blood clot, she immediately visited her GP and showed a photo of it. Doctors then carried out tests and confirmed that she had a rare type of cervical cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma.
She was then told that the ‘clot’ was a part of cancerous tumor.
Since she was diagnosed, Megan underwent five rounds of chemotherapy. She also had a hysterectomy.
“It all started with irregular bleeding and stomach pain but last September I started to notice that I kept having small clots,” Megan shared.
“It continued for months on end but in February 2019, I passed an alarmingly large mass which I took a picture of to show the doctor.
“It was almost as if I gave birth to it, it was so big.
“By the time I was officially diagnosed in April, I had prepared myself for the worst.
“I had got to a point where I could hardly move properly due to the amount of blood I was losing – moving just made it flow quicker.
“This lead me to have symptoms of anaemia, I was really fatigued, dizzy, and pale, I also had lower back pain due to where the tumour was sat which got worse over time.”
Megan’s mother, 52-year-old Jenny, said: “Before Megan was diagnosed we were told by doctors that her heavy periods could’ve been caused by hormones.
“However, fortunately, he decided to due an internal examination anyway during which his voice changed and I need immediately that something was wrong.
“This is when he discovered a ‘mass’ on Megan’s cervix.
“The doctor was extremely surprised Megan had gone so long without some kind of internal examination.”
Megan continued: “The doctors asked me if I wanted to freeze any of my eggs so I could have biological children in the future.
“Initially I didn’t think much of it, but as time went on I realised that whilst I may not be bothered about it now – at 30 years old, it might be completely different.
“In the end, they froze 16 of my eggs for me to access when I want children when I’m older.”
After four months of treatment and surgery, she has finally received the amazing news she got the all clear!
“Megan has been just amazing throughout the whole process and it’s really, really helped her become a stronger person,” her mom expressed.
