Finn Lanning, who teaches the 7th and 8th grade at the AXL Academy in Aurora, Colorado, went above and beyond to make sure that his student gets the best life.

He just changed the mentality of other people by adopting his own student, who was rejected by foster homes. When Lanning got to know that his student is being rejected because of his kidney disease, he decided to adopt him.

Damien was born with a kidney disease, which is an autoimmune disorder. He cannot receive a new kidney till the time he has a stable home environment, and that’s when Finn thought of coming in the picture.

Finn said that he always knew that Damien had some severe health issues as he used to miss school, take medicines, and not eat things that other students were eating.

Even after all the struggles, Damien always had a positive attitude towards life. From staying at the hospital to going from home to home, till now, Damien has never complained about his life.

Damien’s health needs a lot of attention, and constant check, which is not a small thing to do as his nightly dialysis can also require some training. The only place where it was possible was a hospital, but that place wasn’t giving him the personal interaction.

Finn started taking care of the little boy in the hospital too, and when he realized that he lacked general stimulation, he decided to make Damien do things like craft and electronics projects.

Finn said that even after all the efforts, his condition wasn’t improving as the hospital is no place for a child to get better.

After several rejections from foster homes, Finn decided to adopt the boy though he knew that it would require 24-hour attention. Finn says that it is one of the hardest things that I have ever done, but it’s worth it.

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to ease the family’s burden as they cannot help him for his medical needs right now. Damien says that after jumping from house to house, he is finally happy to have clothes and his own room.
