Carlos Mendez had been away from home for a long time.
He was a soldier in the U.S Army. He really missed his daughter and he knew she missed him too. He longed to see her and wanted to make their next meeting special. He planned to surprise her. He knew that would make her so happy and he wanted to see her big smile. He had been in Kuwait where the army had deployed him. It was such a long way from home.
His dear daughter, Solymar, went on with her life while he was away. It was normal for Military children to forge on with life as their parents were away serving their country.
Solymar attended school daily albeit without her dad to see her off. She was very disciplined and paid attention to her teachers’ instructions. She came home and her dad was not there to receive her with a hug and a kiss. But she would go ahead and tackle her homework. She went through this routine daily, but through it, all her father was always in her mind and she longed for the day that he would come back home.

She knew that it would be very soon and she could hardly wait. One fine day her teacher asked her to run an errand. It would require her to step out of the classroom for a while. She obliged as the obedient girl that she was.
She took an envelope from her teacher and left the class. Solymar had no idea what would be waiting for her when she got back. Her dear aunt had been planning quite a surprise for her. Her dad had contacted his sister and she was in cahoots with him. Their plan had been in motion for quite a while now.
Her aunt had called the school and she had been arranging a wonderful moment for her niece. She was sure Solymar had no idea of the plan that she was cooking. Solymar was in for an unforgettable reunion with her dad. She couldn’t wait to see her reaction.
Her fellow classmates knew the moment when Mendez stepped into the class, and everything was set up in preparation for her return, that the girl was in for the surprise of her life. They can’t wait for her to come back to the class because they are sure that Solymar will be so shocked and astonished.

She returned back from her errand, and it was all caught on tape, courtesy of Richland School District Two, Columbia, S.C. When Solymar came into the classroom she wondered why all eyes are on her. She knew immediately that something important must have happened and she wondered what it was. She covered her face with the envelope as everyone stared at her.
She even wondered if she had done something wrong, but as soon as she set eyes on the man sitting in the front row all her worry dissipated. He had balloons and flowers and she knew they were for her. She was overcome with emotion and no longer let shyness stand between her and him. She ran into his arms as he swept her off her feet.
Everyone present in the room clapped in joy as father and daughter embraced. Mr. Mendez could not have planned it any better. He had made his daughters day after being away for so long. He was so glad they were together again.
