Jacob Lang and his wife, Jamie Jenkins, were both ready to start a family.
But it was not easy for them because it took Jamie a long time to get pregnant. The time finally came, Jamie was pregnant. Both of them weren’t able to keep their joy to themselves; they were ecstatic.
The couple was excited as they were going to be parents for the very first time. The pregnancy started out to be blissful and ordinary though what was going to happen next was totally unavoidable.
Jamie was 16 weeks pregnant and as per the procedure was required to undergo an ultrasound scheduled. During the ultrasound, the doctors found something unexpected. With both the parents being 6-feet tall, the baby was too small for a 16-week fetus.
After further scans, it was found out that the baby was affected by a rare case of dwarfism that left the couple speechless and traumatized to react.
They could hardly believe what the doctor said to them and even the doctors were shocked seeing that the parents are standing at 6 feet height. It seems like both Jacob and Jamie share the same genes that caused their offspring to be afflicted by diastrophic dysplasia, a form of dwarfism, which is often considered as the rarest.
It is a disorder that directly affects the development of cartilages and bones. The individuals affected by this syndrome are small in figure, with very short legs and arms.
When Jamie was 34 weeks into her term, the couple was advised by the doctors to terminate the pregnancy. But Jamie and Jacob refused and decided to raise their first child no matter what.
When the baby was born, she was put in an ICU for three months. They lost her three times during that period, but the doctors successfully revived her each time.
Finally, the baby was stabilized and the couple got to take her home. They named her Helena and knew that they have to make little sacrifices in order to raise Helena. But they were ready to do anything for her because they loved her truly.
Helena too was a fighter, there were ups and downs growing up, but the little munchkin never gave up. She continued growing stronger every year. Her mother would take her dress shopping, and her father made sure that she has that beautiful smile on her face every time.
However, Helena started having breathing problems, and the doctors told the parents that there are only ways to cure it – either back surgery or heart surgery.
The doctors recommended the family to fly Helena to the United States to get her checked by a specialist. We hope that Helena will overcome this situation as well because we know she is a born fighter.
