A 29-year-old woman from West Sussex was still drinking and smoking when she was seven months pregnant because she thought her bump was just “comfort pounds”.
Constance Martinez now feels guilty for drinking while pregnant and says she is now very protective of her child because she didn’t protect him when she was pregnant.
She told FABULOUS: “It’s hard to explain the intense amount I was drinking and smoking. I was by no means an alcoholic, but I was enjoying myself as I had no idea.”
In August 2016, Constance decided to see a doctor as she felt something moving in her tummy. When she told her boyfriend, he was left confused.
He said it was because she was eating late at night and she didn’t think anything of it.
When she took a pregnancy test after her friends pointed out that she had gained weight, it came positive.
She said: “I went to my local Tesco and bumped into an old friend who pointed out I had a baby bump. I told her not to be stupid and said I was just fat, but at this point I was really annoyed people were noticing I gained weight.”
When she discovered she was pregnant, she was left shocked and worried as she had been constantly drinking and smoking.
Her boyfriend was also left shocked when she told him she was pregnant.
After a 4D scan, Constance found out it was a boy and she had only two months left to welcome her baby.
Diez Carlito Martinez was born on October 31, 2016, and weighed 6lbs 11oz.
Constance said it was the best experience of her life to hold the miracle baby in her arms.
She said: “The abuse I put my body and then my baby through was horrendous. I have never left Diez with anyone apart from his dad as I’m so scared something will happen.”
“I know parents are protective over their children but I feel I am more so as I didn’t protect him for seven and a half months.”
She often jokes that her son’s nickname should be ‘Jager’ as it was her go-to drink when she was pregnant.
Constance and her boyfriend are now ready to welcome their second child in August and are very excited about it.
