It was in 2008 when seven best friends made a joke: buy a dream house and grow old together when they retire.

Their fantasy finally became a reality when the women bought a property in Guangzhou, China and renovated it into their retirement home.

After renovating it for 4 million yuan ($581,200), the incredible three-story mansion is now finished with an airy tea pavilion, a swimming pool, a huge open kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Located in a village about 70 kilometers from Guangzhou’s city center, the 7,353 square foot house has seven rooms for each of them and a large communal space on the ground floor.

One of the friends, Jin Du, said to Yitiao: “At first it was just a joke. We said we would get together when we were 60 and live the retired life together.”

They met 20 years ago and have been best friends since then. Ms. Jin said they are now in their 30s.

The jaw-dropping mansion features a long dining table for group meals, huge tatami mats, and furniture they have collected from Morocco and India.

These women also built the pavilion in the middle of the field, which connects to their enormous house through a bamboo walkway.

Ms. Jin added: “We’ll cook, have barbecues in the fields, sing and collect food form the village.”

They have also made a pact to each master a skill that would be useful to their lives when they retire, such as growing vegetables, traditional Chinese medicine, playing music and cooking.

“We’re all independent individuals but we can communicate and rely on each other at the same time,” Ms. Jin added.

“Ten years later our children would have all grown up,’ she added. ‘So we hope we can be together again in 10 years.”
