At least, that’s what Laura Williams thought when she sent her beloved daughter Gwendolyn to school. But, when her 9-year-old daughter came back home with this note in her hand, Laura was fuming with anger.

Both Laura and her daughter were shocked about the method school chose to use in order to send this note.

The note that got Laura so angry was one of the fitness score cards, which gives you the results for the test done by every K-12 students in New York City to assess their health. Among the criteria, one measured each student’s Body Mass Index (BMI).

And this statistics is what got Gwendolyn self-conscious and sad.
According to BMI, Gwendolyn was overweight, even though she’s only 4 foot 9 and weighs about 66 pounds. Judging by her height and weight, Gwendolyn’s test probably indicated that she didn’t have enough muscles.

However, as a third grader, Gwendolyn only read the “overweight” part and was devastated.

When she got home, Gwendolyn kept on asking Laura if she really was fat. Of course, seeing her daughter like this broke Laura’s heart. Laura then called the school immediately about the school’s decision to send the note with the kids.

But the school wasn’t apologetic. In fact, the administrators argued that teachers specifically had instructed the kids not to open the letter, but to take it straight home.

However, just like any other curious kids, Gwendolyn could not resist the temptation to open the note before giving it to her mother.

Outraged by the school’s response, Laura eventually shared the story with the media along with her daughter’s photo. According to an interview she did with FOX News, Laura said, “With body images such an issue, it’s amazing to me that these letters weren’t mailed to parents. What kid’s not going to open that?”
