Senator Rand Paul blasted the upcoming impeachment trial as he insisted there’s no chance of Trump getting convicted.
Speaking to Chris Wallace of Fox News, the GOP congressman claimed that Trump’s impeachment trial was over before it started due to the number of Republicans who already dismissed the proceeding verbally.
“Zero chance of conviction,” the Kentucky senator expressed after the host asked him if he believes there is a chance “that the Senate will vote to convict” Trump.
“45 Republicans have said it’s not even a legitimate proceeding so it’s really over before it starts.”
While nothing is yet set in stone, a minimum of 17 Republicans would have to vote to convict Trump for the outcome of the trial to turn in Democrats’ favor. So far, the number of GOP senators who implied they will vote to convict Trump is nowhere near the number needed for a successful conviction.
With the impeachment trial week at our doorstep, Trump’s lawyers have revealed they plan on using last year’s Black Lives Matter riots as part of their defense strategy.
“Well, you know, 2020 was somewhat of an unusual year, and it wasn’t all due to COVID,” Bruce Castor, Trump’s lead impeachment trial lawyer, said in an interview with Fox News.
“There’s an awful lot of tape of cities burning and courthouses being attacked and federal agents being assaulted by rioters in the street cheered on by Democrats throughout the country – and many of them in Washington using, really the most inflammatory rhetoric that’s possible to use.
“And certainly there would be no suggestion that they did anything to incite any of the actions.”

One such example dates back to the summer of 2020 when Representative Ayanna Pressley called for “unrest in the streets” as she said “there needs to be unrest in the streets for as long as there’s unrest in our lives” as she addressed the public.point 216 | 1
Suggesting that political leaders shouldn’t be prosecuted for exercising their right to freedom of speech on Sunday, Senator Paul added:
“Are we going to impeach and potentially criminally prosecute people for political speech when they say ‘Get up and fight for your country, let your voices be heard?’”
