36-year-old Samantha Bladwell was expecting her second child when she experienced breathlessness while walking up the hill to reach her home.

She initially dismissed the warning sign as a symptom of pregnancy but when she became short of breath during a presentation at work, she decided to seek medical attention.

Ms. Bladwell then learned that had stage 4 lung cancer in both lungs, her brain, and her spine.

“It was very surreal, and all a bit of a blur,” she told Kidspot.

The mother-of-two, who has never smoked a cigarette, had always believed that people with lung cancer were those who had spent decades smoking as her father passed away from the illness at the age of 73 after smoking for five decades.

“People assume if you’ve got lung cancer, you smoke, so it’s your fault. I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life,” she expressed. “The truth is anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. No-one deserves to have lung cancer, it’s horrible.”

Ms. Bladwell had a cesarian section to give birth to baby Cecilia before she started treatment. Because cancer had already spread throughout her body, surgery wasn’t an option.

Since starting targeted therapy, which kills the cancer-causing cells, Ms. Bladwell saw great improvements to her health.

However, treatment stopped working after nine months as her cells became resistant to the therapy.

The mother-of-two then joined the Oscillate trial and underwent radiotherapy to kill cancer cells in her brain.

“It was a real wake-up call for me to know that if you have lungs, you can get lung cancer,” Ms. Bladwell said.

If her treatment fails, she will undergo chemotherapy.
