Newborn Baby Was Found Starving To Death In The Bushes. Then, Police Officer Became A Hero

Edinora Jimenez was walking through the local forest, picking out oranges when she heard a strange noise coming from deeper inside the forest.

Curious, Edinora ventured further in closer to the source of the strange sound, unsure what laid ahead. At first she thought the noise was coming from a cat, but then she finally laid her eyes upon it. It was not cat, but instead an infant baby girl. The baby girl couldn’t have been older than just a few hours and even had her umbilical cord still attached. It seemed as though the mother had given birth on her own and then abandoned the poor baby in the forest. Edinora immediately called the police right away. Officer Luisa Fernada Urrea was first on the scene.

Officer Urrea had just recently become a mother herself and when she saw the abandoned girl laying the undergrowth of the forest, her heart sank.

The baby was starving, perhaps having not been fed ever in her life.point 56 | Abandoned in the cold forest naked and covered in dirt and mud, the baby was also on the brink of hypothermia.point 146 |  It was a tough sight for Officer Urrea to take in.point 188 | Officer Urrea wrapped the baby in a blanket, but when it came to the starvation the police are not equipped for such a situation at all.point 299 |

Officer Urrea had to quickly think on what to do.point 40 | Being in a remote forest far from civilization, there wasn’t many options and this baby desperately needed nourishment.point 148 |  As she was deciding what to do, her motherly instincts took over.point 204 | 1

I’m a new mother and I have milk, and I recognized the needs that this poor little creature had. I think any woman would have given her nourishment in the same circumstances.

That’s right, this heroic woman decided to breastfeed this poor baby herself! It all seemed almost natural to Officer Urrea as she saved the baby from starvation.

Thankfully, after the baby was fed and warm for the very first time in her life. The baby soon fell asleep and Officer Urrea took the baby to the Colombian Family Welfare Institute. The Colombian Family Welfare Institute is now taking care of the baby as she waits for the perfect adoptive family who will treat her the way she deserves. As for the mother who abandoned the baby girl, the police are continuing to look for her, possibly so she can face charges of abandoning the baby.

Director of the orphanage Jhon Arley Murillo said that the charges could be very severe for the mother.

We could be dealing with a case of attempted homicide, although it’s the prosecutor who will decide the charge

Unfortunately, we may never get closure on why the mother decided to abandon the baby in a remote forest.point 87 | Even if the mother was scared, there are many laws across the world, such as Safe Haven in the United States or better known as the Baby Moses law.point 206 |

This law allows scared mothers to give their babies to Safe Havens such as fire departments, libraries, schools and more.point 102 | The mother can be completely anonymous, with no questions asked.point 157 | The baby will be kept safe and secure before being put up for adoption so they can live a happy life.point 238 | 1

Had Edinora not been picking oranges, the baby may not have ever been found. Additionally, without Officer Urrea who decided to breastfeed the baby, the story could have been much worse. Thankfully, the stars aligned and this baby’s future is looking much brighter.

When the internet heard of Officer Urrea’s act of bravery, she was quickly heralded as a hero.point 84 | Many praising her quick thinking and doing something that we don’t normally ever think about.point 169 | Indeed, in the United States especially, the thought of breast feeding in public is heavily looked down upon by many including talk-show host Wendy Williams who infamously said “I don’t need to see that.point 351 |

I just don’t want to.point 23 | ” Actress Alyssa Milano quickly fired back at her that breastfeeding was natural and that the only reason she thinks it’s bad is because she’s sexualized the images of breasts.point 188 | 1

However this isn’t the only debate that is coming up from this inspirational story either, with many looking at the breakdown of gender in police departments. Had a male police officer shown up instead of Officer Urrea, the baby may not have made it. Unfortunately, women make up only 6.5% of state police forces in the United States according to the 2007 Department of Justice statistics. A staggeringly low number to be sure.
