Parents Face Prison Time And Fines For Homeschooling Their Children In France


Parents who decide to homeschool their children in France could face harsh fines and even prison time after the country moves towards banning homeschooling.

In response to Islamic extremism in France, the country has proposed a bill that prohibits parents from homeschooling their kids instead of sending them to school.

As the Times reported, the bill, which was introduced on Wednesday, has been brought forward in an attempt to counter religious extremists from influencing children.

The decision to undergo educational changes follows after the death of Samuel Paty, a French teacher who was brutally killed by a radical teenager. According to the reports, the student beheaded the teacher in October after Mr. Paty presented caricatures of Prophet Mohammed during his free speech lesson at his school.

Following the teacher’s premature death, President Emmanuel Macron vowed to fight Islamic extremism in the country despite facing a major backlash from various countries around the world.

Under the new laws, homeschooling in France will only be permitted when it is “impossible for reasons relating to [the student’s] situation or that of the family” to send the child to school.

Parents who break the rules and proceed with homeschooling will reportedly face up to half a year in prison or a hefty fine of €7,500 (8,900$).

“We must save our children from the clutches of the Islamists,” Gérald Moussa Darmanin, the Interior Minister of France, told the paper Le Figaro.

To ensure that all children will attend school, each child will be provided with an identification number that will be used to prove their school attendance.
