A former teacher has gone viral after revealing he had quit his job to work at Walmart because not using his degree comes with a much better salary.
28-year-old Seth Goshorn is an Ohio man who proudly posed in a Walmart vest as he made a video clip in which he explained that he is earning at least $12,000 more working as a Walmart store manager than he did during his six-year career as a teacher.
“Leaving teaching after six years to go be a manager at Walmart and make more not using my degree,” the young man wrote in his viral TikTok clip.
Goshorn previously told Good Morning America that he was earning $43,000 a year as a second-grade teacher working in Stark County.
Eventually, he realized that the pay was just not good enough considering the work he puts in and decided to make the bold move of quitting his teaching job and defying the purpose of his degree by applying for the position of a store manager at his local Walmart.
As Goshorn revealed, the new job comes with much better pay – $55,000 a year before any bonuses to be precise.
“You don’t have to go and get another degree, or more initials or letters in front of your name to move up,” the 28-year-old suggested.
While he insisted his purpose wasn’t to discourage anyone from becoming a teacher, Goshorn took an aim at the educational system as he said it would be better if teachers didn’t have to work a second job to make ends meet.
“I wouldn’t disparage anyone from becoming a teacher — it’s one of the most noble professions that you can do,” he continued.
“Think about how good our teachers could be if they just focused on teaching and not having to work a second job on weekends.”
He added: “They chose to be a teacher because they’re passionate about it. They didn’t choose to have to work a second job that comes along with it, and that’s the thing that I would have loved to see go away.”
