A renowned Nobel prize winner has spoken out about the coronavirus pandemic and insisted that “lockdown saved no lives.

As Stanford University professor Michael Levitt expressed in an interview with The Telegraph, the lockdown “may have cost lives” due to “social damage.”

According to the professor, who correctly predicted the scale of the coronavirus pandemic, more harm than good may have derived from imposing lockdown.

As the Nobel laureate argued, the decision to impose the lockdown was sparked by “panic” and not by science.

“I think lockdown saved no lives. I think it may have cost lives. It will have saved a few road accident lives, things like that, but social damage – domestic abuse, divorces, alcoholism – has been extreme,” Levitt told The Telegraph.

The professor’s claims appear to match the JP Morgan report that suggested that the death toll was overestimated and that imposing lockdowns didn’t influence the course of the pandemic.

According to JP Morgan’s strategist Marko Kolanovic, “flawed scientific papers” sparked fear that resulted in governments imposing “inefficient or late” lockdowns.

As Professor Levitt also advised to his own country, people should be encouraged to social distance and resort to different safety measures while being allowed to return to work and get on with their lives.

“For reasons that were not clear to me, I think the leaders panicked and the people panicked. There was a huge lack of discussion,” he said.

While the professor isn’t an epidemiologist, he successfully predicted the course of the pandemic based on his own calculations and the assessment of the outbreak in China.
