Mom Devised An Ingenious Hack To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies

A mom recently shared a simple and easy trick that can help you take care of the resilient fruit flies that refuse to leave your property no matter what you do.

Dublin resident Tina Smith posted a picture of trapped fruit flies on Facebook, with the caption: “Anybody else getting these horrible little things? I don’t have fruit and I’m getting them, disgusting.”

The post showed how serious of a problem these tiny monsters are for a lot of people. Tina’s post was flooded with comments where people told how they could relate to the same problem.

Tina caught the fruit flies wandering around in her kitchen. The strange thing is, there were no fruits for the flies to feast upon.

To get rid of the annoying little insects by using the stuff instantly available in her kitchen, Tina filled a couple of cups with apple cider vinegar.

She covered them with cling film and poked little holes in it for the flies to get trapped in the sticky fluid inside the cups.

The logic behind her ingenious hack is very simple: the flies sense the presence of the sweet vinegar by its smell and fly to get it. Once they drop through the hole in the cling film, there’s no way out for them.

Tina told RSVP Live that the trick was effective instantly. “Within the first half hour I had caught over twenty of them,” she said.

Within a few hours, there were no longer any flies in her home. She added: “It’s working so happy days.”

The fruit flies are much more than just annoying – they are a major source of food contamination.

According to a report from Rentakill, fruit flies can “cross contaminate food stuffs with bacteria and pathogens from unsanitary locations they’ve frequented such as rubbish bins, fermenting, decaying vegetation and drains.”

The larvae of the fruit flies feed on over-ripened fruits and you can mistakenly ingest them. Such a condition can cause discomfort in the belly and diarrhea.

But Tina has successfully shown how the flies can be eliminated using stuff present at home.

It is not a surprise to know that the hack works. All of us have seen the stubborn insects at bars that only land into our beers whenever they get the chance.

It might be helpful to keep a few apple cider-filled cups topped with cling films at the bars to divert the attention of fruit flies.

However, it’d work only if the flies like the vinegar more than they like being drunk.
