Since the start of the pandemic earlier this year, the senior lady was unable to give her beloved son, 56-year-old Stephen, a hug due to coronavirus restrictions in the country.

Fortunately, the home for the aged recently installed a special visiting booth with a big glass screen through which visitors can see their family members.

On Friday, Stephen paid a visit to his mother at Eothen Homes and the mother and son were able to see each other for the first time in months.

As the 92-year-old Alzheimer’s patient revealed after the visit, it felt “like a lost treasure came to life” when she saw her son. While the pensioner said it was strange to be separated from her son by a glass screen, she acknowledged the idea was better than nothing at all.

“I always think of him. And he said the same to me,” Freda said.

Speaking of the experience, 56-year-old Stephen added:

“It was very good. Her eyesight is failing sometimes so she had to get a bit closer so she could see who it was. It was nice being able to sit close to my mom. There was a screen in front – but if you put your hand on the screen, you can feel the warmth.

“She could feel the warmth of my hand and I could feel the warmth of hers. It’s not as good as a hug but better than a phone call.

“It’s a good move from the home to do this. I think it’ll be very good for the residents and their families. It’s very safe.”
