The birth of a child can trigger numerous powerful emotions, from joy and excitement to anxiety and fear. However, it can also cause something people might not expect – depression.

Postpartum depression or postnatal depression is a mood disorder associated with childbirth. It commonly includes sadness, irritability, crying, anxiety, lethargy, and appetite, and sleeping problems.

PPD is not a weakness or a character flaw. It is a complication of giving birth, according to Mayo Clinic. Mothers who have postpartum depression need prompt treatment to manage the symptoms and help them bond properly with their babies.

Postpartum psychosis is a rare condition that develops within the first week after giving birth. Symptoms may include sleep disturbances, agitation, paranoia, confusion, hallucinations, and attempts to harm yourself or your child.
