A Georgia mother has pleaded with school officials not to mandate the wearing of face masks at the school due to an alleged lack of evidence that they offer protection from coronavirus.

In her speech during which she addressed the Paulding County School District Board of Education, Jennifer Whitlock, a mother of two students, insisted that “the threat of this virus isn’t any different” than other illnesses schools deal with and suggested face masks could impact students’ communication skills and cognitive development.

According to Whitlock, students could also turn face masks into dangerous weapons such as slingshots and blindfolds while being forced to wear them at the school.

“I have always felt that my children, my two children in the school system at Paulding County are safe. Never once did I doubt that and I still don’t doubt that today,” the mother said as she addressed the Board of Education.

“The threat of this virus isn’t any different. On a daily basis, schools deal with hand-foot-mouth, strep, flu, pink eye, croup, worms … All of these illnesses are prevalent in children. Is the China virus prevalent in children?”

As Whitlock went on to say, things have to get back to normal. “As much as we’re fearful of the unknown, the one thing I know is God is in control,” she added.

“When considering changing the mask policy please ask yourselves these questions: Can you show me and other parents the safety studies for long-term masking in children, toddlers, preschoolers, and teens? Can you show me the study that has determined the systemic health effects of masking for prolonged periods of time in minors?point 544 | 1

“Can you show me the study of how widespread use of cloth mask in public settings prevent viral respiratory infections in children? Can you show me the study that looks to the effects of long-term masking in children with regard in communication and speech, development, cognitive function, mental and emotional health, and pure relationships? Can you show me the study that supported masking in children during the flu season in prior years? Why haven’t we been masking children all along?”point 418 | 1

Concluding her address of the Board, Whitlock said:

“It is a fact we do not have enough evidence to support children wearing masks. We don’t have enough evidence to mandate that.”

After ending her speech, the mother received loud applause from the audience.
