Ask any child what they want to become when they grow and chances are they already have an inkling of what it is they want to do.
Whether it’s something outrageous like becoming a cowboy or a pirate or something more practical like a doctor or pilot, the important thing is that the child already has a goal in mind.
Whether or not that dream career actually comes to fruition is another matter. Things like becoming a pirate are obviously not practical options (or they shouldn’t be, unless they’re planning to live a life of crime in places where piracy still occurs) but other times, there are very real limitations on what career one can choose (for example, you may want to become a pilot but if you’re severely near-sighted then that’s not going to happen).

Caroline Ricke, of Cincinnati, Ohio, is an aspiring model. However, she knows just how competitive the modeling industry can be. Not only are there thousands upon thousands of models all around the world, but she also says that the modeling industry imposes some unrealistic standards of beauty that make it difficult to get into the profession and make it even harder to stay.
To demonstrate this, she recorded herself sending direct applications to top modeling agencies. As she expected, none of them replied, except for one that she got excited about only to find out that it was a dummy account her brother had set up just to send her some encouraging words.
Caroline said: “I messaged top modeling agencies through Instagram asking for a contract.
“When DM’d the agencies, I attached some pictures of myself as well as an outlandish statement to grab their attention.
“While filming this video, I knew there was a high chance that these modeling agencies would not respond.
“There was a small part of me that was hoping for a response but the only response I received was from a fake account my little brother made using “models” in the Instagram handle.
“Throughout the video, I was using sarcasm and satire to poke fun at some of these modeling agencies who have unrealistic beauty standards.”
Caroline not bagging a lucrative contract only proves her point about the unreasonable standards in the modeling field, there are some changes that are happening in the industry.
For instance, plus-size models are now gaining more traction and landing more contracts. There have also been examples of models with “less-than-perfect” features who managed to get on the pages of magazines and commercials.
One part of it is luck but the other part is also having good character traits such as being hard-working, dependable and being able to manage one’s limited time and resources when working gigs.
While Caroline’s argument has merit, it’s certainly not the end-all or be-all and if you’re thinking of a career in modeling, then there may still be a chance for you.
