Toy Company Mattel Released Gender-Neutral Dolls To ‘Meet Demand From Children’


Toy company Mattel just launched a new line of gender-neutral dolls called ‘Creatable World.

The line lets kids interchange clothes, accessories and hair on dolls, meaning they can be both female and male.

Kim Culmone, the senior vice president of Mattel Fashion Doll Design, said: “We see this line as an opportunity for us to open up that dialogue around what dolls are for and who dolls are for.

“And also as the world begins the celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we absolutely fundamentally believed it was time to launch a doll line free of labels and free of rules for kids.”

Mattel also said that the new line is its response to demand. “Kids don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms.”

The company consulted pediatricians on how to make their dolls gender-neutral, including author and pediatrician Cara Natterson.

According to the Daily Mail, Natterson praised Mattel and said: “A collection like this just knocks down every barrier to play.

“Through research, we heard that kids don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms. This line allows all kids to express themselves freely which is why it resonates so strongly with them.”

She added: “We’re hopeful Creatable World will encourage people to think more broadly about how all kids can benefit from doll play.”

Mattel said the idea worked alongside a “dedicated team of experts, parents, physicians, and most importantly, kids” to come up with 6 different kits with different skin tones.

The doll kits costs $29.99.
