A white apartment complex manager threatened a black couple, saying she would call the cops if they don’t go out of the swimming pool because the guy was wearing socks.
According to Camry Porter, she was at the Riverset Apartments pool in Memphis, Tennessee, with her partner and two godchildren when they were confronted by Erica Walker who claimed to be the community manager.
Walker was frustrated that Porter’s boyfriend had dipped his feet in the swimming pool while wearing socks. She also told them that she would call the cops if he didn’t remove them right away.
The footage, which was taken by Porter, shows Walker arguing with the couple, saying the socks were not allowed as they were ‘against proper pool attire.’
“I think she’s calling the police because he has on socks,” Porter said while filming the incident. “She’s walking off making a phone call to whoever she needs to call. I haven’t said anything crazy to her, but I did tell her I was not going to leave.”
The video was posted on Facebook and is making rounds on social media. Porter also said that the woman identified herself as the manager of the building, and demanded that her partner follow the rules or leave the area.
“And she was like, ‘Well, I’m the property manager,’ and she pointed at the rules. The rules say, ‘Proper pool attire.’ It doesn’t specify what proper pool attire is,” Porter expressed.
Walker also said that hats were also forbidden at the pool, but the video shows many of Walker’s friends wearing caps while in the pool.
“So, she basically said no hats, no shirts, no socks. We have two men, who are her friends, sitting right here in hats. Two hats. We have a man over here sitting in a hat,” Porter said.
“It’s 25, 30-plus white people out here and you haven’t said anything. You’re partying with them. You’re partying with them! But when we come, it’s an issue.”
After having an internal investigation of the incident, it was confirmed by the Trilogy Real Estate Group that Walker’s action was inappropriate and she was fired as the manager of the building.
“After assessing statements from Ms. Porter and determining that this former employee’s actions violate our company’s policies & beliefs, she is no longer employed by Riverset Apartments.”
