While all of us have some sort of spiders in our homes, the spider that Gil found creeping under his bed could very well end his life.

As it happens, the photographer came across one of the world’s most venomous spiders – a Brazilian wandering spider which is also known as the banana spider or armed spider.

Though their bites can prove fatal for humans of all ages, quick treatment with antivenin makes death less likely.

After spotting the gigantic spider, which was the size of a human hand, and hundreds of its offspring under the bed, Gil went on to grab his camera and take a picture that would later earn him a prestigious award.

“Not only there were literally thousands of spiderlings under the bed, right beside them rested one of the biggest ‘non-tarantula’ spiders I have ever seen. Its body length was 45mm but with its leg span it could easily cover my hand,” the photographer wrote on his blog.

After taking a snap of the spider, Gil won an award in the Urban Wildlife category of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

While most of us would run for the hills after taking the photo, the brave man reportedly went on to help relocate the giant spider outside his room after the photoshoot.
