The dangers of cocaine are well known but this story would definitely make you hate the illicit white substance.

Ian Higginson, who started using cocaine after becoming a flight attendant and consumed the substance for more than 25 years, suffered probably the worst consequences of the drug.

“I became an air steward and flew long haul to the Caribbean,” the 44-year-old told Manchester Evening News in a recent interview.

“In places like Jamaica cocaine was everywhere, and the more I flew there and spent time there between flights I’d get to know the locals, and a lot of them had access to cocaine.

“I met a guy who used to import it, so when I landed in Jamaica I’d go to see him and he would give me a block of it and it would last me until I went home.”

And it wasn’t long before Ian became so hooked up with the drug that he almost ended all his social interactions.

Though he had started consuming cocaine to help stay awake during his new job, it soon grew into a habit. Soon he was spending his entire earnings on the drug so as to keep up with the addiction.

After using the substance for around 25 years, the man’s health hit rock bottom. His condition became so worse that clots of blood and even flesh started coming out of his nose.

“Lumps of flesh would come out,” he said. “I was disgusting. The pain was so bad, but I’d still put coke up it to try and stop it.”

Consequently, his nose collapsed and the man had to rush to the hospital.

After undergoing surgery, he was told by the doctors that he was allergic to cocaine and that his persistent use made it impossible for him to heal the chunks of flesh being blown out.

Posting a before and after photo of himself, Ian wrote on Facebook: “I have posted this because if I can stop a 25 year habit, which was more like a jail sentence which nearly cost me my life, then so can you.

“If I can give someone the kick start in changing their life then I can turn my negative into a positive. Cocaine has done me absolutely no favors at all. It’s only once you stop that you see it for yourself.”

Ian hopes to help other people like him who are dealing with cocaine addiction.
