Exhausted Koalas Went To Riverbank And Dipped Their Bodies In Water After Bushfires Destroyed Their Home

Koalas have been seen trying to cool down in a river after apocalyptic bushfires destroyed their habitats.

It was Lorene McRae who captured the scene while visiting the banks of the Murray River at Tocumwal in New South Wales.

She said that many koalas would climb down and dip their bodies in the water despite jet skis and boats passing by.

Ms. McRae, who was camping in the area, wrote on Facebook: “Amidst the horror and heartache of the suffering and death of our beautiful wildlife, I thought it might be nice to share a “feel good” story of hope.

“Each day they climbed down the river banks at dawn to sit and sleep on the damp logs, on the sand or in the root systems of the fallen trees.

“Occasionally they would back up and put their bottoms in the water and go back to sleep.”

She also said that the animals would just cling on tighter to the branches when boats pass by.

“Not a single person on the water noticed them. When hunched over they really did look just like lumps of wood!” she added.

She also said that the koalas would go back to the trees during night fall but would return to the river in the morning.

Pictures of the koalas show them in groups trying to dip their bottoms in the water while others catch some sleep while in sitting position.

One internet user commented: “If I had enough money to pay my bills at home and support myself while away, I would go to Australia and do anything I could to help. In a heartbeat.”

Another wrote: “My heart aches for the people and animals of Australia. I pray that they will be able to contain the fires.”

A third added: “I’d be happy if we spent the entire aid budget on these little guys, to be honest. I place a higher value in them than Propping up Chinese space programmes.”
