It’s Normal For Kids In Finland To Ride Their Bikes To School In -17°C (1.4°F) Weather

As we have heard that cycling is not a good option in winter months, rain, snow, and ice. People find these months just unsuitable for biking. Well, this Finnish town is proving it wrong and telling us that cycling is perfectly possible in these months too. You just need the right planning and infrastructure.

Pekka Tahkola is an urban well-being engineer for Navico Ltd. and a cycling coordinator for the City of Oulu. He took a photo of the local school’s bicycle parking lot, to prove that nothing is keeping these kids off their bikes.

“It’s normal; always been like that. I cycled and kicksledded to school when I was a kid, too,” he says. “And it’s the same thing even in minus 30 C.”

He wrote on his twitter handle: 1000 out of 1200 kids in this school in #Oulu, #Finland, arrive by #bicycle, even in winter. 100-150 walk, rest by ski, kicked and car. This day it was -17°C.@WCCCalgary2019 #WCC2019 #wintercycling

There are two more bike parks like this at this school. And I have to say that the racks should be a lot better :)
