Husband And Wife On Life Support Refused To Stop Holding Hands

Jim had been battling cancer for 8 long years before he was placed on life support in the intensive care unit at Kingston General Hospital.

His wife, Cindy, had a heart attack the next day and was also put on life support. The two were admitted in two different hospitals.

Their son, Chris, told CBC News: “Me and my brother don’t drive so going between Kingston and Brockville was really rough. We tried to get mom transferred to Kingston but no one could help us.”

Luckily, Jim’s doctor managed to make it happen.

“I should’ve realized it wasn’t a good sign but I was so appreciative of what he did,” Chris expressed.

But during a bad dream, Jim pulled out his breathing tube. He had signed orders not to resuscitate so the tube wasn’t replaced and there was nothing left that could be done.

Chris told People: “We told him that mom was now here. He started freaking out. But when we told him he wasn’t going to make it, he got out a pen and paper and tried to write because he wasn’t able to speak.”

Jim wrote the word ‘Mom.’ So the hospital did something they have never done before. They placed two patients, one who was on life support while the other just came off of it, in the same room.

“It was very risky. But they did it for them. He started bawling and saying thank you by doing the praying motion,” Chris shared.

Jim clasped Cindy’s hand while she was sedated.

“The reason I took it (photo) was so that when she came off life-support, she could see that Dad was right there with her,” Chris said. “If there’s one definition of my dad, it’s that he was a proud husband and proud dad.”

When Cindy woke up a few days later, she found ease knowing that she had a chance to be with him one more time before he died.

Chris told People: “I want people to see how much love they had for each other. My parents got to be together until the end. We should all be so lucky.”
