According to Oregon State Police, Mark David from Hillsboro wounded the bull elk on Saturday but could not find it before dark.

David and the owner of the private property in Tillamook tried to search for the animal the next day. He tried to kill the elk with his bow when it suddenly charged at him and gored him in the neck, authorities said.

According to the National Park Service, the elk rut or mating season generally occurs from early September to mid-October. During that period, the bull elk is considered dangerous for people.

Yellowstone National Park wrote on Twitter: “WARNING: The elk rut has begun in Yellow National Park. Bull elk can be extremely dangerous during this time. You are responsible for your own safety.”

One person commented: “Hunting is a horrendous thing to do to any living creature and GREAT job to the elk.”

Another wrote: “Good. These “hunters” kill for pleasure only. I’m in strong favor of the 2nd Ammendment but I despise so-called hunters who wound more than kill animals who have no chance against sophisticated weapons.”

A third added: “Animals know how to settle a score. Most deserved.”
