The Granny pod is also known as the MEDCottage or in-law cottage, the tiny home is a portable hospital room designed by a Blacksburg, VA, company, with help from Virginia Tech.

They are designed to be installed in the backyard behind the main home. The tiny cottage is like a bungalow from the outside with room for a bed, living room space, kitchenette and bathroom.  hand railings, defibrillators, first aid supplies, lighted floorboards and a soft floor to minimize damage from falls are the standard safety features of this home.

The size of a spacious master bedroom is about 12 by 24 feet and it also features double French doors and to accommodate wheelchair facility and hospital equipment if ever needed.

Financial planner Carolyn McClanahan told CNBC, “If people can age in place and age at home it’s much healthier, and the family is happier, but it can be very expensive. Granny pods can cost anywhere from $100,000 to $250,000. So you got to weigh longevity in there with it.”
