41-year-old Luca Trapanese always wanted to be a dad.

But when he and his partner split up, his dream to be a father stayed with him.

When he was finally able to apply for adoption, he was informed that he would only be able to adopt a child with health conditions such as an illness, behavioral problems, or disabilities.

“A child that had been rejected by all other traditional families,” Trapanese expressed.

He was completely okay with the guidelines and stated that he had experience with the type of children listed.

He then received a call that there was a 13-year-old girl with Down’s Syndrome who needed a loving family. She was abandoned by her mother at the hospital.

Alba had already been rejected by more than 20 families.

“I struggled to contain my joy. I immediately said yes,” Trapanese said.

Trapanese never held a baby before but when he did, he felt immediately that it was the right match.

“I knew I was ready to be her dad,” he said.

Trapanese brought baby Alba to his family house to have bonding times with her. He noticed that she had a very strong personality. He also realized that she enjoyed being with other people so he took her in the museum, parks, and sometimes, even in his workplace.

His passion for helping children with special needs started at a young age. After his childhood friend passed away from cancer, he started volunteering at a church to help children with disabilities and critically ill people.

“Alba completely revolutionized my life,” he said. “She brought me happiness and a sense of fulfillment.”

In response to those who do not agree with gay people adopting kids, he said: “This is nothing but our life’s story.”

“I think mine and Alba’s story shatters so many stereotypes about fatherhood, religion, and family.”

Even though over 20 families dismissed the chance to have Alba as their daughter, Trapanse said he couldn’t imagine her going to another family.

“I’m proud to be her dad.”
