It’s a time where, despite being in a rush to grow up, children require gentle nurturing and guidance from the adult figures around them.

We look up to the elders around us as our mentors or role models. Every child longs for someone to hold their hand and walk them through this journey called life, showing them what is right and wrong. Children rely on their elders for protection.

Unfortunately, for Klynn Scales, this was not the case. Growing up for her was entirely different. She did not have a happy childhood. As a young girl growing up in Kansas City, she did not have many of these positive role models around her to look up to. She grew up in an environment filled with drugs and violence which was not healthy for a girl her age.

Klynn’s 27th Street home was commonly known for drug abuse, violence, and other horrors that no child should have to endure. But she was lucky enough to find a ray of hope in the form of an anonymous officer from the Kansas City Police Department.

When she was 9 years old, Klynn met a police officer who might have figured out what the young girl was going through.

Every day, the anonymous officer would stop by the 9-year-old’s house as he made his usual rounds, and Klynn, as reliable as clockwork, would gladly run to greet him.

She explains to Fox4 Kansas City, “He was the one person that I trusted in my life as a kid.” She tells Fox4 Kansas City, “Through all the bad situations, I would just picture him saying that he was there for us and that if we ever need him, he would be right there. He would always protect us, and so those words would come to me during the worst of my childhood life.”

Despite the fact that Klynn did not know the name of this kind officer, she felt that he was the only person she could trust.

One fateful day, Klynn and her family did not have any food to eat; she got so desperate, so she resorted to stealing from the local 7-Eleven in order to feed her little brothers who were already starving. The anonymous officer immediately noticed the little girl’s absence, he got worried because Klynn was not in her usual spot.

She was not there to wave to him like she always does, neither did she come running to greet him. His instincts told him to walk inside and check if she was in the house.

The anonymous officer was astonished when he opened the door and found the little girl in a terrible state, she was very sick. Sadly, she was all alone, with no one to take care of her. She was in urgent need medical care. He immediately rushed her to the nearest hospital and in the end, the little girl was treated for malnutrition, but still, she did not know the officer’s name.

Unfortunately, Klynn eventually lost contact with the kind police officer and moved out of Kansas City for a better life. Twenty years later, after moving out of state to Texas, Klynn found herself thinking of the mysterious protector from so many years before, she wanted to find the man that had been so kind to her and decided it was time to thank him. Luckily, the anonymous officer was found. He was later revealed as Jeff Colvin.

He told Fox4 Kansas City, “I had actually thought about her and wondered whatever happened with her…”

At last Klynn was finally reunited with the anonymous police officer, Colvin with the help of Sgt. Jennifer Jones who had received an email about a little girl who used to live by the police station. She finally got a chance to thank the man who was such a positive role model in her life. It was such a meaningful experience to the police officer. He has honored that someone noticed his good work, though he believes that he was simply doing his job of protecting citizens.

He explains: “Most times we go through our career not realizing we truly helped anybody out.” He admits, “That was the case with me where I wondered if I was even on the right career path.”

It seems everything has come full circle in this little story. As of July 2016, Klynn was set to begin the police officer application process in Houston, Texas. The young lady was greatly inspired by Officer Colvin to become an officer as well. Wow, what a shining example of the power of positive police work!
