Former Police Officer Takes His Own Life Because He Was Unable To Cope With Coronavirus Lockdown


The heartbroken family of a 54-year-old policeman who took his own life revealed that the former officer was finding it challenging to cope with coronavirus lockdown.

Michael Burton was discovered lifeless in Sheffield 72 hours after the officer was reported missing from the house he was living in Calow, Chesterfield.

The police officer had retired after 26 years of service from Derbyshire Police was said to be heavily affected due to his brother’s suicide. But according to the family, he was finding it difficult to remain indoors.

The devoted father was last seen when he left his house in Calow on 18th April but his body was found three days later at a property in Sheffield.

Michael’s family said he was a very sociable and dedicated father and was struggling to cope with lockdown as well as his brother’s loss in 2015.

The family revealed that Michael found the recent coronavirus restrictions difficult because he was extremely sociable and could not spend time with his family and friends because of the lockdown.

This came after the inquest into Michael’s brother’s suicide that affected him beyond anyone’s imagination.

Michaels’ brother, Kevin, who was 47, was found lifeless on Boxing Day 2015 at bed and breakfast.

Michael had retired from his police services almost 18 months ago as well as spent time pursuing his hobbies. His family noticed a severe mood change in him after the lockdown was announced on 23rd March.

The family statement noted he was a warm-hearted, supportive, generous, and intelligent conversationalist who had always been full of enthusiasm and energy.

As a teenager, Michael had written and released Quantum, his comic book, which he was highly proud of. Michael loved exploring and holidaying, competing in and hosting pub quizzes, collecting Marvel memorabilia, cricket, and NFL Americal football.

Hayley Barnett, Chief Superintendent of Derbyshire Constabulary said that Mike was a respected and well-liked member of their Derbyshire policing family and would be missed by his colleagues.
