When people retire from the job they have been working for decades, they are honored for their works in the job.
But it is so easy to forget their contributions in the job as they do not stay around anymore.
However, these firefighters didn’t forget their fellow firefighter, who retired decades ago.

The bond among the people who work together is strong. Especially for the people who fought side by side and trust each other in desperate situations, nothing can break their bond. Firefighters, police officers, Army members, Marines, and people with uniforms know this.
And Lieutenant Douglas Marks and Dekalb County’s firefighters show the perfect example of such a bond.
A former firefighter from a few decades ago, Lt. Douglas Marks, has suffered from multiple diseases. He has dementia, emphysema, and has been through multiple strokes. As he was living with his wife, who is also weak herself, his wife Maxine called the local fire department occasionally to ask for help.
“I cannot count how many times – I think every shift that has been over there…I don’t know how many firemen have been in my house,” she said.
But recently, the firefighters, who came into Lt. Marks house, were shocked to find out that this elderly man was one of them.

Lt. Marks was county’s oldest living firefighter in the county. One department member said, “Once we found out that he worked for Dekalb, naturally we were just drawn in to learn more about him.”
As they tried to know more about Lt. Marks, his wife, and the house, they noticed that the home needed repair. Nobody in the house was able to repair their house, they just lived with a hole in the roof, a torn up floor, and no insulation. Even worse, the house was not accessible with a wheelchair.
Firefighters couldn’t just leave the house of the Marks. So, they started to fix the house.
Captain Shane Jones of Dekalb County Fire Department said, “Even though we didn’t work with Mr. Marks, we have that bond with him if that makes sense? We know what he did because now we’re doing the same thing.”

In the video below, we can see the strong bond between firefighters. Current firefighters spent their own time and effort to make the house better for Lt. Marks and his wife.
