As Canada-based Jamie Clarke revealed, he wanted to bond with his son but had a hard time getting him to talk to him instead of staring at his screen.

And so, the father decided to force 18-year-old Khobe to have a break from the digital world by taking him on a one-month trip to rural Mongolia.

According to Jamie, who is an adventurist who already climbed Mount Everest twice, he first got his son to spend one weekend without his cellphone as he took him to a remote ski resort on his 50th birthday.

“I had never before that experienced a weekend without my phone, essentially. It was very weird for me,” Khobe said in an interview with BBC.

During the outing, the father has also proposed to his son that the two go on a long adventure in Mongolia together.

“I said no pretty quickly. But it kind of turned into this fun idea… it became such a thing of preparation that it was very exciting to go do it,” Khobe added.

And so, the father and son left for Mongolia and traveled over 1,300 miles across the country in a month.

Needless to say, Khobe found out that things can also be fun without his phone. However, he admitted missing his gadget a lot at times.

“I think the whole time I was pretty consumed by missing my phone. You realise how boring everything gets. When I’m bored I can just turn on YouTube or watch Netflix. What am I going to do, look at the stars and twiddle my thumbs?” the 18-year-old said.

As for the boy’s father, he feels happy to get the chance to “see Khobe in a new way.”

“It helped me see Khobe in a new way. I saw him as a kid who kept leaving his jacket on the table, not cleaning up the dishes,” Jamie expressed.

“And I was able to see him step up to being a young man, and I was impressed by how well he was able to perform under pressure.”
