A 26-year-old father woke up in a hospital room and discovered that his three daughters died in a suspected DUI crash that also left him paralyzed.
The wreck occurred near Hot Spring Landing, Idaho, and caused the deaths of 3-year-old Drayka Rayshell, 5-year-old Kya Lurak, and 6-year-old Aneena Lurak.
The grieving father suffered a broken neck in the crash that also injured his fiancée and his children’s step-mother, Emma Weigand, 25.
The driver responsible for the crash, Matthew Park, 46, appeared in court for his arraignment. He pleaded not guilty to two counts of felony aggravated DUI and three counts of felony vehicular manslaughter.
Tests revealed that Park had blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit for driving, according to Idaho Statesman.
When asked by police, he admitted to drinking in numerous bars before driving. He was described in a probable cause affidavit as slurring words, smelling of alcohol, and wearing urine-soaked pants.
Park allegedly said to officers he was ‘drunk’ and didn’t notice the car that was stopped at a temporary traffic light for construction on Highway 20.
Lurak, his three daughters, and his fiancée were returning from visiting family when his vehicle smashed into Park’s white 1995 Dodge pickup track.
Park managed to escape from the accident unharmed. “If I was perfectly alert, I would have seen some resemblance of a silhouette of a car there, and I didn’t. I did not see that.”
All three of Lurak’s children were strapped into car seats in the backseat. Unfortunately, 5-year-old Kya and 6-year-old Aneena were pronounced dead at the scene while 3-year-old Drayka passed away at a hospital.
Lurak was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. He suffered a collapsed lung and broken vertebrae.
Park is expected to go to trial in connection to the crash. He could face up to 75 years behind bars if convicted.
