An angry mom has spoken out and fumed about people mispronouncing her baby’s name and mistaking her for a boy.
As the lady in question revealed in her lengthy Mumsnet post, she is a mother to two girls whom she named Beatrix and Lois.
While she’s always adored the classic female names and believed they have “minimal room for misinterpretation,” she has since come to realize that people have a hard time pronouncing the names.
Beatrix, which should be pronounced as ‘bee-uh-trix’, is often referred to as ‘beet-rix’ according to the child’s mom. Her sister Lois, on the other hand, is often called ‘Loyce’ rather than ‘lo-iss.’
Making the matter worse, strangers constantly mistake the girls for boys – something that started getting on the mom’s nerves over time.
“I usually let the first go as I just think ‘close enough,’ but I can’t resist correcting ‘Loyce,’” the mother explained.
“Beatrix is sometimes also called Beatrice, which is an understandable mix-up that we did expect but is annoying when even family do it, and Lois is often misheard as Lewis so that people assume she’s a boy.”
As the mother admitted, the constant mispronouncing of her children’s names – even by immediate family members – sometimes manages to get on her nerves.
After opening up about the issue in front of other parents, several moms also spoke out and revealed how people constantly mispronounce their children’s names.
“I have a Louis – as in French ‘Lou ee.’ A classic name but in UK he gets called Lou-IS. Drives me mad. Luckily we now live in a French-speaking country so everyone gets it! However, that brings new challenges with daughter’s name!” someone wrote.
Another mom said: “I have an Emilia. Technically she should be em-ee-lee-ya but people often and usually say Amelia. But they’re so closely sounding I really don’t care.”
