Couple Enjoyed Drinks With Neighbors By Converting Backyard Fence Into A Table For Just $200

An innovative construction worker has made a table (at least it works as a table) from a fence.

He undertook the project to help his in-laws enjoy drinking with their neighbors while they cannot go to a pub because of the lockdown.

The fence-table-bar is made while keeping social distancing measures in mind. The man who built the unique fence-table hybrid, Mathew Rees, works for Superior Rural Fencing, a construction company in Sydney.

Mathew constructed the thing within one day with $200 worth of materials procured from Bunnings Warehouse.

The idea was actually inspired by a video that Mathew’s in-laws’ neighbor had seen on social media.

However, the video in question showed a table made on a timber fence and Mathew’s mother-in-law’s backyard had a Colourbound fence.

Nonetheless, Matt told his mother-in-law that he could execute the idea on her fence. The materials needed to complete the project included latches, chains, welding rods, concrete, and some screws.

To make the table, Mathew removed a part of the fence from the area that’s easily accessible for people of both houses.

Emma, Mathew’s wife, explained how the table works. She said that the fencing panel was replaced by two sections and two hinges were installed in the center.

The hinges make it possible to lower down the top subdivision of the fence, making a table.

To hold the table’s panels at exactly 90 degrees when the table is being used, chains were used to suspend the table.

Latches were used to keep the panels folded as a part of the fence while the table was not in use.

After the completion of the project, pictures of the table-fence hybrid were shared by Emma on a Facebook group called Bunnings Mums Australia, where they got quite some appreciation and popularity.

“Wow how wonderful to have such lovely neighbors. My neighbors too are great, love this idea,” one woman commented.

“Absolute genius!” another opined. A third one wrote: “Aussie innovation at its best.”

The two families sharing the table have been living together for 35 years and are very happy to be able to socialize even though the world is under lockdown.
