When police officers responded to a call on May 19, they didn’t know that suspect Grady Wayne Wilkes was waiting for them.

The armed man reportedly wore body armor and protective headgear.

Auburn Police Capt. Lorenza Doresy said that when the officers arrived at Wilke’s residence, bullets hit three of them before Wilkes was captured by police.

Court records stated: “Officers knocked on the door, and Wilkes answered the door wearing body armor and was armed with a rifle. After Wilkes opened the door, he immediately began firing at the officers.”

Officer Evan Elliot had minor wounds and Officer William Buechner suffered injuries.

But Officer Webb Sistrunk’s injury landed him in the intensive care unit. He was shot in the right shoulder and had a critical injury that doctors had to airlift him to Columbus, Georgia for more specialized treatment.

“He was airlifted and has been in ICU at Piedmont Columbus Hospital and will continue to undergo a number of medical procedures going forward,” a GoFundMe page for Officer Sistrunk said.

Reports said that there was another police professional involved in the shooting incident: Officer Sistrunk’s K9 partner Leon.

When Sistrunk was transferred to specialized care, Leon came to visit him in the hospital.

Doctors and nurses lined the halls as Leon entered Sistrunk’s room. As soon as the officer saw his partner, he said: “Hey buddy! I missed you.”

Leon then nuzzled into the officer’s hand before jumping onto the bed. The K9 showered him with wet kisses.

“It’s really good,” Sistrunk said. “He’s my bestfriend.”

According to the GoFundMe page, Leon’s favorite toy is a tennis ball and his third birthday is coming up in July.
