A hero doctor went above and beyond his duties to save the life of an elderly man during a flight by sucking 800 milliliters of his urine to stop his bladder from bursting.
There were still six hours left before they reach New York when the elderly passenger broke out into cold sweats and said that he couldn’t urinate.
A staff announced that assistance of anyone with medical experience is needed, and Dr. Zhang Hong immediately agreed to help.
Dr. Hong, the head of vascular surgery at Jinan University’s First Affiliated Hospital, said: “The pensioner’s abdomen was bloated, he could not sit still and was sweating a lot.
“He was going into shock and may have suffered a risk to his life if we didn’t tend to him urgently.
“His family said he had a history of prostate enlargement, so we suspected this was causing urinary retention.”
This means that if he did not get the pee out of his bladder, it would explode.
So Dr. Zhang made a makeshift catheter using a piece of plastic tubing, a milk carton straw, a syringe from the medical kit of the plane, and some tapes.
He first tried to use the syringe to extract the elderly man’s urine. However, the needle was too thin and something more efficient has to be done.
Without thinking twice, Dr. Zhang used his mouth, spitting the urine into a bottle. He managed to extract 800 milliliters of urine in 37 minutes.
If Dr. Zhang did not help, there’s a high chance the elderly man would’ve passed away before reaching their destination.
“There was no other way. I didn’t think too much about it,” Dr. Zhang expressed. “I only wanted to help him extract the urine retained in his bladder.”
He added: “Saving lives is a doctor’s instinct.”
