When Samantha was born, Raphael and Glenda became aware of the challenges ahead on how their daughter would communicate with other people as she grew up.
After moving to a quiet road in Massachusetts only a year before giving birth to Samantha, the couple knew they were in a nice neighborhood. That perception became clear shortly after their daughter arrived. They discovered that their neighbors held secret meetings.
It turned out that their neighbors were not only great people to talk too, but they are genuinely kindhearted. The residents learned that their daughter was deaf, so they got together to teach themselves sign language.
According to Raphael, their daughter Samantha is also eager to talk with everyone. However, she becomes sad when she couldn’t communicate with others well.
The neighbors on their street knew they had to learn a way to converse with the adorable toddler. Even if it was only asking her how her day was.
So the neighbors started to meet up every week to learn sign language. They also hired the services of American Sign Language teacher Rhys McGovern.
“Sam has a full community that’s signing and communicating with her and her family, and it is a beautiful story,” he said.
The residents dedicated themselves to learning the sign language for Samantha’s sake, and over 20 people were present at the classes every week.
