The French government recently released a warning statement informing citizens that doing cocaine will not cure coronavirus.
This statement was issued after a false claim with regards to the same was shared on social media. Mocked “breaking news” was posted online which claimed the cocaine could combat the dangerous Covid-19 virus.
Clearly, the claim had no truth behind it, and the French Ministry of Social Affairs and Health released an official statement saying that cocaine does NOT fight against coronavirus.
Moreover, it is an addictive drug that results in serious side effects and is extremely harmful to the well-being of people. France has over 1,100 confirmed cases of Covid-19 virus with 19 dead.
Emmanuel Macron, the President of the country, also hosted an emergency meeting over the weekend to discuss this emergency situation.
As of now, the country is at Stage 2 of the alert level, and it would be banning public gathering or over 1,000 people from stopping the spread of this virus. In the UK, on the other hand, the death toll has increased to five along with 319 confirmed cases.
In order to deal with fake news, the UK government has established a specialized unit to address misinformation and stop its spreading. Oliver Dowden, the Culture Secretary, said that protecting the country from misinformation as well as digital disinformation is at top priority.
The country plans to respond to such threats effectively and take necessary measures to stop them. Facebook is also taking severe measures to take down false information spreading digitally.
It has hired a fact-checkers who will assess the authenticity of the claim made online. If it is found to be false, then the team would limit their spread of Facebook as well as Instagram.
