A white couple who adopted a baby boy from an Asian background 17 years ago just discovered that they had made an awkward mistake.
When the couple were matched with the child, they promised the biological parents that they would raise him properly, the Daily Star reported.
“We assured them the child would be loved which was the truth because we instantly fell in love with our baby boy,” the couple expressed.
A few months later, they befriended people in the Chinese community near their home as they wanted to connect their son with his cultural roots.
They also enrolled their child in Mandarin classes and took him on many trips to China.
But 17 years later, they found out that they had made a huge mistake.
While helping their son fill out his college application, they noticed that his birth parents did not have Chinese surnames.
“Digging through my office for the needed paperwork, I came across his adoption papers and it was only then that I saw it.
“Something so obvious, so painfully, brick-to-the-face obvious, something that neither my wife nor I, in the stupidity of our youth, had registered…” – his birth parents’ surnames were ‘Kim’ and ‘Park’ – this means they were Korean, not Chinese.
Despite their huge mistake, the clip gained thousands of comments from people who were impressed by their efforts.
“Well hey, Mandarin is one of the world’s most spoken languages so they did good,” one person commented.
“They should have just raised him with love no matter where he is from,, we all have roots from somewhere, but it is where we are now that counts,” another wrote.
A third added: “Right idea… wrong execution.”
