Doug and Lynda McCready from Michigan, who were born on the same day in the same hospital, are set to celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary in June.
Doug and Lynda were born on April 7, 1970, at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids just a few hours apart.
Lynda moved to California when she was one but would visit her grandparents back in Michigan during the summer.
Lynda’s grandparents lived in a cottage on Bills Lake which was next to Doug’s family’s summer cottage.
Their families knew each other but Doug and Lynda became friends when they were 16.
That was the start of their romance.
Doug said: “That is when it all started for me… [and] where I first noticed her. We went to the movies, boated and swam in the lake, and hung out. I noticed her smile and laugh right away.”
Lynda added: “He would constantly come out to his dock and ‘fish’ when my sisters and I were out on our dock sunbathing. I thought it was cute that he always came out when we were outside.”
After Lynda left for California, Doug confessed his feelings for Lynda to her brother and asked him to tell her about his feelings.
He then also wrote a love letter telling her that they were destined to be together.
But, he didn’t get any reply to his letter and when he called her, Lynda told him he was not the one for her.
Doug said: “She was speechless and didn’t know what to say. I eventually got a return letter stating ‘I’m flattered but I am not the one.’ I was devastated.”
However, when Lynda returned to Michigan with her twin sister Lora in their senior year of high school, she confessed she loved him too.
The couple finally got married on June 20, 1992, and are now have three sons – Jon, Matt, and David.
Lynda said: “It didn’t seem possible that I would leave Michigan when I was 1 year old and live in California and still end up marrying the boy I was born next to [But] we will be celebrating 28 years together this June.”
The couple recently celebrated their 50th birthdays and will be celebrating their 28th wedding anniversary in June.
On their 50th birthday, the couple was due to go on a trip but they had to cancel it amid coronavirus crisis.
They decided to go to the cottage on Bills Lake in Newaygo where it all started and made the special day even more special.
When the couple was asked about the secret to their successful marriage, they said communication is the key.
Lynda said: “Talk through things with each other and never go to bed angry. Always say ‘I love you’ and kiss goodnight, even if we are still angry, and kiss in the morning too.”
While Doug advised finding things you both enjoy and do together and share as many things as possible with each other.
